The Face of Beaumont Parenting: Toni DeCamp

Toni and her husband

Let’s play a game of word association. I say “nurse.” What do you say? Comfort? Care? Kindness? You’d win our game with any of those answers — just like the Beaumont Parenting Program wins with the volunteer I’d like you to meet. Toni DeCamp has been a pediatric RN for over 30 years, and for the last 16 years, she has brought that experience, care and comfort to the Beaumont Parenting Program as a volunteer.

Toni is currently an Individual Family Support volunteer for the Beaumont Parenting Program (BPP). She has also served the program and its families as a breastfeeding support caller and by making hospital visits.

When asked to tell me her favorite thing about being a BPP volunteer, Toni said “encouraging new families, letting them know they are doing the right thing, knowing that they appreciate the support, being there for them and seeing them grow as parents and become confident in their ability.”

BPP families aren’t the only ones who benefit from Toni’s support and encouragement. In addition to her work as a nurse and her volunteer roles for Beaumont, Toni also volunteers for Abigayle Ministries, mentoring and teaching infant care classes to single pregnant women that are without shelter or support. Toni credits her spirit of volunteerism to her role model, her mom, who is 88 years old and still helping others.

Toni and her children

In her spare (seemingly spare) time, Toni enjoys watching football and basketball and visiting Michigan lighthouses with her family. Toni has 4 children: Angela, age 28; Al, age 25; Nick, age 22; and Nicole, age 18. Toni is also a newlywed! She married David DeCamp on January 1st of this year, after having been widowed since 2007. They live in Shelby Township. Toni also enjoys photography and Nicholas Sparks novels (though she confided that her favorite children’s book is Goodnight Moon).

So what motivates a person to spend their life caring for others? Toni shared with me a story that she thought people in the Beaumont family would be surprised to know. When she was 9 years old, she had open heart surgery. She tells me that it was at that point that she decided to become a nurse and take care of children. The BPP is so lucky that Toni made that decision, and that she brings her comfort, care and kindness to Beaumont’s children and their families every day. Thanks, Toni!

It is so nice to be able to put a face with the names that I see on the web.

    Love the pics.
