5 Reasons You May Want To Take A Class For Your Second Pregnancy

We often think of Childbirth Education classes as something primarily for first time parents. However, parents having a second baby (or more) may have some unique educational needs. Beaumont’s Prenatal & Family Education Department has several offerings that may help families prepare for another birth. Find the right one for you:

1. “Refresher” Parents who want to review or learn on their own schedule: Independent Study: Childbirth Education is a web-based program that includes an informational booklet and a site with videos, downloadable PDFs and general information that review all areas of labor, birth, postpartum and breastfeeding. After reviewing the website, you come to a one-session skills class with an instructor where you practice and review comfort measures, positioning, breathing techniques and more. You can have your questions answered by an experienced instructor! At the class you will also receive handouts, including a book for “refresher “parents. The skills class may be a mixture of first-time and “refresher” parents where all learn from each other.

2. Looking for a different birthing experience? HypnoBirthing® teaches deep relaxation techniques and a more natural way of birthing. If a family took HypnoBirthing during their first pregnancy, a refresher option is available.

3. Blended families may have unique needs. If this is the first baby for one of the parents, it may be beneficial for both parents to take a traditional Childbirth Education or HypnoBirthing® series. This is especially true if it has been 5 or more years since mom or dad had a baby.

4. If you had concerns breastfeeding your first baby or haven’t breastfed previous children, many find that taking our Preparing for Breastfeeding class is helpful the next time. Again, a mixture of first-time and experienced parents makes for a lively and educational class!

5. For the child or children who will soon welcome a new sibling: Big Brother / Big Sister classes at all three Beaumont hospitals for children ages 3 – 8. This interactive class includes discussion about what babies look like, what new babies can and can’t do, how big brothers and sisters can help care for a baby, possible feelings, and a tour of the nursery and room where mom and new baby will be after birth.

We welcome families planning for “another time around” into all of our classes. We also welcome questions, concerns, or discussion of special learning needs. Please call our office at 248-273-6324 if you have questions.
