Venturing Outside of Our Backyard

My daughter, Emma, and I journeyed on a two-week educational trip to China last Spring with her middle school Chinese class.  It was an amazing trip in which 13-14 year olds were able to experience a life that is very different than their own.

Seeing that the lifestyles and countries of all people are so varied touched my daughter in such a profound way. In this picture, we are visiting an orphanage of children whose parents are in jail. We took supplies and played with them.

I must confess that I initially felt overwhelmed with the thought of traveling such a long distance for a long period of time. But each time I travel with my children, even when it’s within our own beautiful state, it’s wonderful to spend time together seeing people and places outside our own backyard.

Where have you traveled with your children? What did you and your child gain from the experience?
