Is Your Child in the Right Car Seat?

Sunday September 16th  marked the beginning of National Child Passenger Safety Week for 2012.  If you have never had your car seats checked, this is the week to do it! It has been estimated that over 80% of car seats are incorrectly used each day! Additionally, the National Highway Transport Safety Association (NHTSA) reports that “Car crashes are the number one killer of children 1 to 12 years old in the United States“.

During a car seat check, you can expect that a certified technician will inspect your car seat for correct installation and, including proper fit, angle and that the seat is appropriate for the child’s current height and weight. They will check to see if there has been a recall of the seat, as well as ensure that the seat is not expired. A technician will talk with you about proper harnessing, make sure the straps and chest clip  are at the correct level and are snug. Before you leave, we will also offer information about airbags, the dangers of projectiles, making sure your kids are safe around cars, vehicular hyperthermia, backovers, unused seatbelts as well as what to expect for the next level of child passenger safety.

There are several events this week — all FREE. Many are Saturday September 22, “Seat Check Saturday”. It is important to bring your children with you, or at least know their current height and weight and have the instruction manual for the seats as well as for the vehicle. Find a location near you.

Beaumont Health System will be offering free car seat checks on Thursday, September 20, 2012 from 6pm-8pm at Mike Savoie Chevrolet 1900 West Maple Road  Troy, MI 48084. No appointments needed. Monthly seat checks are also offered the first Thursday of each month from 11am-3p at the same location. However, appointments are required. To schedule your car seat appointment for these monthly events, please call 248-898-SAFE (7233).

Thanks for the sensible critique. Me and my neighbor were just preparing
to do a little research on this. We got a grab a book from our local
library but I think I learned more clear from
this post. I am very glad to see such excellent info
    being shared freely out there.
