A Place To Read

reading to childrenMake reading fun by designating a special area in your home just for reading. A shared space with parents is a great way to encourage reading while spending time together.

The space should be comfortable for both you and your children and clutter free. Here are some tips:

  • Be sure you have a place to sit and room for your child to sit with you
  • Bean bags are cozy and easy to rearrange
  • Keep the lighting bright enough to read but soft enough to relax
  • Have an electrician lower the light switch so the child use the area on his/her own
  • Choose a small number of books that will be accessible to your child at one time
  • Display children’s books so the cover is visible
  • Keep children’s books within reach for them

Ideas for displaying children’s books:

  • Spice racks
  • Book slings
  • Book sling bookshelf (stabilize by attaching to wall)
  • Rain gutter book shelves (DIY)

Spice rack book storage

All can be attached to the wall within your child’s reach. Makes the books easy to get to and easy for kids to keep organized.
