Turn Up the Radio and Turn Up Language Development

IMG_1888

As you prepare for a fun-filled summer, I am here to share some exciting children’s tunes for you and your children to enjoy. Research shows that music boosts your mood and spirit. But did you know that it is also great for language development too?

As much as you want to drive around town rocking out to your adult playlist, please consider making a compilation CD for your children. Not only will the music help with language, but most children’s songs have rhyming in them. This is an early literacy skill.

We keep a CD handy in our car, as well as one in our bedroom to let our girls dance while we get ready for work.

Here are some popular children’s artists along with our favorite songs.

Ziggy Marley: Family Time, I Love You Two, Wings of An Eagle

The Laurie Berkner Band: Victor Vito

The Verve Pipe: Wake Up, When One Became Two

Chicken Soup for Little Souls: Put Your Happy Face On, Don’t Worry Be Happy

Disney’s Greatest Hits: Under the Sea, Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf

Dr. Jean and Friends: My Mother is A Baker, Miss Sue, Tooty Ta

Raffi: Tingalayo, Down on Grandpa’s Farm

Gemini: Hello, Pizza, Rooster Story, Zum Gali, This Land is Your Land, May There Always be Sunshine

Gemini and The Verve Pipe are both local bands. They often perform at music in the park in Plymouth, Northville and at the Detroit Zoo music nights.

What are some of the favorite tunes you share with your children?
